How it works

You win holding no flower or season tiles at all. It is one faan.

There are eight bonus tiles in a 144 tile set, and any you draw are set aside for a replacement, so most hands collect at least one. Finishing with none is less common than it sounds.

How to build it

There is nothing to build. Flowers arrive by chance and cannot be refused. What this row rewards is simply a hand that drew none, which is why it is counted as a bonus rather than as a pattern.

Common mistake

Assuming it is worthless because it needs no skill. Measured across real hands, only about 23 percent of winners hold no bonus tile. That is close in frequency to several rows players chase deliberately.

What it combines with

It adds one faan to anything. It is exactly opposed to Complete Flower Set, which needs all four of one kind, and to Matching Flower, so those rows can never appear together with this one.

Questions people ask

Do seasons count as flowers here?

Yes. Both groups of four are bonus tiles. Holding any of the eight loses this row.

What if a flower arrives on my winning draw?

Then you held a bonus tile when the hand ended and the row does not apply.

Is it really worth a faan?

Yes. Our tile set has the same eight bonus tiles in 144 as a real Hong Kong set, so the frequency here is Hong Kong’s own.
